New Horizons





It is 2 years since I finished full-time paid employment.  Many of you have followed alongside me through “Border Crossing” posts, as I took some sabbatical time for rest, renewal, and reorientation.  I saw the months that followed as fallow time while I discerned what my unfolding future may look like, sound like, feel like, taste and smell like.  So many possible options were being entertained.  My “Border Crossing” posts became less regular as I allowed what was gestating to take form.  As the new year commenced, I could see new opportunities unfolding. 
But 2020 did not unfolded as expected.  Instead COVID-19, a tiny piece of rna, possibly originating in a hardly known part of the world (at least unknown to most of us in the West) has shaken us from our complacency as it killed 750,000 people around the world and infected about 20 million.  Health and wellbeing has been prioritized over economics and our interconnectedness and interdependence has been highlighted.
So many of the new opportunities I saw unfolding have had to be paused.  Others have morphed into Zoom offerings.  Little has continued as before.  Yet the pause has allowed for other pursuits to be explored: watercolour lessons via email, trainings from around the world delivered me in the comfort of my own home and a website developed.
Yes, some two years since finishing full-time paid employment I can now articulate what I see as my calling and my offering in this time and this place- to be a listening presence.  It is as simple and as challenging as that.  To listen with open ears, open mind and open heart in varying contexts such as Spiritual Direction, Professional / Pastoral Supervision, Retreats and Reflection days and importantly to listen among the fringes.  So, I invite you to explore my website Vision and Action visionandaction.com.au
It is ironic at this time COVID-19 has curtailed border crossings, yet maybe we are living into a future where there are no borders, just horizons.  For me, I am excited to continue to explore these new horizons and I hope you will join me.

Granddaughter Matilda less than 24 hours old, now 21 months.  A miracle! Since I last wrote on this blog Australia has seen a 6 week election campaign and the surprise re-election of a Liberal National Government under the leadership of Prime Minister Scott Morrison.  As a woman of faith, hope and love I sent him the following email yesterday, less than 48 hours after his "miraculous" win. Week 8: Prayer Out the Window

I woke this morning with the sudden realisation that I can’t pray.   For the past eight weeks during this sabbatical time I have been unable to pray.   Not in the traditional way of saying prayers.   But I abandoned that notion of prayer many decades ago.   For I no longer believed in a God that pulls puppet strings to bring rain for the farmers and sunshine for the holiday makers, that decides who is killed in a car crash and who will survivie,   Or even a God that sent his son to die for our sins that we may live.   None of that made sense to this feminist scientist of the 1980’s. But I have not even been able to follow my spiritual routine for recent years.   A time of quiet upon waking each morning, gratitude journaling, contemplating scripture , reflecting on the content of daily devotionals, followed by a short period of silent meditation interrupted by the gymnastics of my monkey mind.   A routine practice that has grounded my ensuing day as I ventured out into the bus

Preparation well underway!

After an incredibly life-giving and privileged 3 years as Pastoral Care Officer at Matthew Talbot Hostel, a large men's homeless hostel in Sydney and for 4 years, as Chaplain at MRRC, Silverwater, a remand jail for 1000 men awaiting trial or sentencing, I am taking a 4 month sabbatical for rest, renewal and reorientation. After taking a few days for final preparations, the Sabatical commences with the AECSD Conference in Canberra- Spirutal DIrection in the Borderlands before heading to the USA and the UK during which time I will visit examples of spiritual accompaniment in the margins, explore some labyrinths, indulge in some creative pursuits and connect with family, friends and women of The Grail.
